21 Lesson Class A Study of the Foundations of Living
Student Book
This study was written initially by my good and sainted friend Rev. Dennis Schefielbein in the late 80's. The outline includes Luther's Small Catechism. I have added to it and edited other portions. I have used this study to help members review the doctrine of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. I have also used this course to instruct adults who wanted to learn more about the Bible, the LC-MS or who wanted to join the local congregation. I have been through this course innumerable times in every congregation that I have served with the exception of my first. When students hesitate at the length of the study, I let them know that as many times as I have been through this particular class, every time I teach it, I learn something new. This is true. My personal teachers manual reflects this in the notes that are added during each class. I have offered this class in 1.5 hour sessions. The goal was to include two lessons in that session. However, there are lessons that do not allow such speed. Lesson Nine, Baptism and the Lord's Supper are three such examples. But in my experience I have learned that most students are very interested in taking time on these issues since there is very little clarity and teaching at this point in their own background. One word about technique. There is a lot of looking things up in the Bible. I do not assume anyone knows where anything is. I joke about having a Bible that has been through this so much that it almost turns to the citation by itself. I also encourage people to go out and get tabs to mark the books. I do the reading out of the Bible with them following along. I don't want the student to be self-conscious. I want to, to the extent that I can, remove barriers for the Holy Spirit to work in them through the strong doctrine of the word of God. At the very least, I pray I don't get in the way. Please use these lessons freely. I only ask that you not sell them or profit in anyway other than by the extension of the Kingdom of God.
